Who we are and What we are doing?

My photo
We are fourth year nursing students working with ProjectGrow, a charitable organization, to organize a staff and faculty fundraiser at UBC-Okanagan to send young girls to school in Ghana. Vida Yakong, a UBC Okanagan PhD student initiated the project 3 years ago in her hometown villages of Nyobok-Nkenzesi, Ghana. Yakong created a community development project working with the village women by asking them what they needed to create a sustainable living. With the need for education identified by the community, Project Grow’s fundraising efforts will provide opportunities for children, particularly girls, to receive a formal education. The total cost of education from kindergarten through to grade twelve is two thousand dollars including uniforms, textbooks, and tuition. Project Grow has no administration costs, which means that 100% of the donations will benefit the young girls.

Ghana Education Costs Increasing

Girl child education was the focus of a recent newspaper article out of Ghana. The newspaper article highlighted the increase in Ghanaian school fees to a level that many families could not afford. Families voiced their concerns about no longer being able to keep their girls in school and were upset with the recent increase in fees. They need our support. The education of a girl is essential to prevent early pregnancy and young marriage. By supporting girl child education WE can make a difference for a family and an entire community. One educated individual can positively affect the wellbeing of others. Education is self sustaining!

Please read the article to get a better understanding of why the education initiative of Project Grow is so essential. It is very interesting and highlights the essence of the fundraiser we have started with Project Grow. Thank you for checking out our blog. Your support is very much appreciated.
